As Indonesia seeks to transition towards a high-tech economy and leverage AI to become a leading hub for digital trade and investment, strong U.S.-Indonesia digital trade relations, AI cooperation, and pro-innovation policies will play a key role.

During the Forum, Ambassador of Indonesia to the U.S., Indroyono Soesilo, highlighted the Indonesian Government’s commitment to making Indonesia a hub for AI infrastructure, identifying and alleviating investment bottlenecks, advancing productive commercial and research relationships, and realizing its broader national digital trade and AI agenda.

Indonesia is expected to be one of the biggest beneficiaries from responsible AI adoption, with AI expected to increase GDP per capita by an average of 14% over the next five years. U.S. Government representatives highlighted sustained commitment to advancing a trusted, secure tech stack abroad and partnering with like-minded partners. “We are reaching an inflection point in AI adoption, and Indonesia is well positioned to be a key regional hub for digital trade and AI innovation,” said Amb. Brian McFeeters (ret.), President & CEO of the US-ASEAN Business Council. “To fully realize this moment, Indonesia must maintain a pro-innovation ecosystem that enables the free flow of data and AI development aligned with local priorities.”

The discussion recognized the close economic partnership between the U.S. and Indonesia and identified further areas for public-private cooperation, particularly with local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). As Indonesia expands its role beyond a major commercial market, panelists discussed key enablers to support Indonesia’s ambitions to be a key player in digital trade and AI innovation. Panelists emphasized the importance of strong stakeholder consultation, alignment with internationally-recognized standards and best practices, and international coordination on regulatory frameworks, such as Indonesia’s draft Presidential Regulation on AI and Copyright Bill. They also highlighted the importance of sustained public-private partnerships, supported by a policy environment that encourages innovation and investment. Balanced, pro-innovation copyright frameworks, including text and data mining exceptions with opt-out mechanisms, could further support investment in Indonesia’s digital economy. Together, these efforts can advance Indonesia’s national priorities, foster innovation, strengthen U.S.-Indonesia cooperation, and drive economic growth through robust digital infrastructure.

The Forum brought together senior representatives from the Embassy of Indonesia, U.S. Government, and U.S. private sector, as well as trade and AI policy experts including:

Teddy Bretschger, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Services, International Trade Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce \u200b \u200b

Pangeran Ibrani, Minister Counselor (Economic Affairs), Embassy of Indonesia in Washington, DC \u200b \u200b

Daniel Castro, President, Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF)

Justin Fair, Director of Bilateral and Multilateral Affairs, Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy, U.S. Department of State

Nick Bramble, Director of Trade and Economic Policy, Google \u200b

Jonathan McHale, Vice President of Digital Trade, Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) \u200b

Dave Kumar, Global Public Policy, Media and IP, Meta

For the past 42 years, USABC has served as the leading voice of U.S. industry in promoting mutually beneficial trade and investment relationships with Southeast Asian partners.
