US-ASEAN Business Council and Ministry of Environment Co-Host Workshop on Advancing Extended Producer Responsibility in Indonesia

The US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment (KLH), hosted the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Workshop in Indonesia on August 20, 2025, in Jakarta. The event convened over 60 attendees, including senior officials from key government agencies—KLH, the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), and the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin)—alongside representatives from the private sector, industry associations, civil society organizations, and circular economy experts. Participants included Food Industry Asia, Asosiasi Daur Ulang Plastik Indonesia (ADUPI), the Centre for Sustainability and Waste Management Universitas Indonesia (CSWM UI), Indonesia Packaging Recovery Organization, Indonesia Packaging Federation (IPF), Freepoint Eco-Systems, Asosiasi Guna Ulang Indonesia (AGUNI), DietPlastik Indonesia, and Sirsak (PT Sirkular Saka Indonesia).

The workshop provided a platform for key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, industry associations, and sustainability experts to discuss the development of Indonesia’s EPR regulations, emphasizing scalable solutions to advance a circular economy and strengthen waste management systems.

As a follow-up to the discussion, USABC expressed its readiness to co-lead in supporting the implementation of EPR in Indonesia in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. The next steps include ensuring that the implementation of EPR is both practical and achievable through the establishment of a strong legal and regulatory foundation to support non-profit Producer Responsibility Organizations (PROs), the adoption of legal frameworks for thresholds and EPR policies, and other enabling regulations.

These efforts will also focus on strengthening the implementation of the national circular economy agenda as a key modality, harmonizing product and service standards with international best practices, and enhancing the role of innovation, digitalization, and green technologies to ensure an effective and sustainable transition.

The event was supported by Coca-Cola, SC Johnson, and ExxonMobil, as well as USABC partner CropLife Asia. Through these collaborations, the workshop aimed to develop actionable recommendations that will contribute to the success of the EPR implementation and drive long-term sustainability efforts in Indonesia.
